Destination Superstation: UN Headquarters in NYC!

Datum:
Earlier this month, ten Oberstufe students from Phorms Gymnasium Berlin Mitte attended the 41st annual UNIS-UN conference on the topic: Immigration – Crossing the Line.

Our delegation joined over forty other schools and five hundred students from around the world for a day of workshops and cultural exhibition at the UN International School. Following this, we enjoyed two full days inside the General Assembly Hall, debating issues of homeland security and human rights in the face of rising immigration and discussing the difference between economic migrants and political refugees.

Keynote speakers included a young man who had left El Salvador as a teenager and made the dangerous journey north to the US so that he and his younger brother could begin a better life, free from the social pressures, gang violence, and police corruption of their home country.

To complement our academic programme, Phorms students also chose to visit a handful of top notch museums, spend a sunset at Freedom Tower (the new WTC), and explore an aircraft carrier stationed on the West-side of Manhattan.

Beyond all the shopping and bagels, our delegates were polite, punctual, and had no trouble conducting themselves as professional ambassadors of our school. Their positive energy and kindness further enhanced our reputation overseas, and we look forward to continuing this tradition at Phorms Gymnasium Berlin Mitte.
